Budesonide has been approved in many countries since 1988. It is included in numerous medicinal products.

Structure and properties

Budesonide (C₂₅H₃₄O₆, M_r = 430.5 g/mol) is a racemate and exists as a white, crystalline, odorless, tasteless powder that is practically insoluble in water.

Effects

Budesonide is anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and immunosuppressive.

Indications

• Obstructive bronchial disease, COPD see under budesonide inhalation.
• Bronchial asthma see under budesonide inhalation
• Rhinitis see under budesonide nasal spray
• Nasal polyps see under budesonide nasal spray
• Inflammatory bowel disease: Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis
• Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) see under oral budesonide suspension, melting tablets.
