Burns: Lab Test

1st order laboratory parameters – obligatory laboratory tests.

  • Small blood count
  • Inflammatory parameters – CRP (C-reactive protein).
  • Electrolytes – calcium, chloride, potassium, magnesium, sodium, phosphate ↓
  • Fasting glucose (fasting blood glucose).
  • Blood gas analysis (ABG); including carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) in arterial ABG for detection of carbon monoxide intoxication
  • Total protein, albumin
  • Urea i. Serum [> 35: increased protein catabolism].
  • Liver parameters – alanine aminotransferase (ALT, GPT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST, GOT), glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH) and gamma-glutamyl transferase (gamma-GT, GGT).
  • Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)
  • Renal parameters – urea, creatinine, cystatin C or creatinine clearance, as appropriate.
  • Coagulation parameters – PTT, Quick, fibrinogen.
  • Blood grouping (should be done already in the shock room).
  • Zinc
  • Swabs from the burn wounds and from wound swabs, secretions and catheter material – for bacteriological examination.
