Butoconazole vaginal cream is no longer available in many countries (Gynazole). It is on the market in other countries.
Structure and properties
Butoconazole (C19H17Cl3N2S, Mr = 411.8 g/mol) is present in drugs as butoconazole nitrate, a white crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water. It is a chlorinated imidazole derivative.
Effects
Butoconazole (ATC G01AF15) is antifungal against Candida and other fungi. Effects are due to inhibition of ergosterol biosynthesis and disruption of the fungal cell membrane.
Indications
For the treatment of vaginal fungus (vulvovaginal candidiasis).
Dosage
According to the SmPC. The cream is administered vaginally with a prefilled applicator as a single dose.
Contraindications
Butoconazole is contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity. For complete precautions, see the drug label.
Adverse Effects
Possible adverse effects include local reactions such as redness, burning, itching, irritation, and swelling.
