Infusions and other preparations are made from the freshly crushed drug. Caraway fruits, caraway oil and the dry extract of caraway are also components of many finished medicines of the group Carminativa (remedies against flatulence) or Stomachika (stomachic).
Caraway seeds: what dose?
The average daily dose is 1.5-6 g of the drug, unless otherwise prescribed.
Preparation of caraway tea
To prepare a caraway tea, 1.5-2 g of the drug (1 teaspoon equals about 3.5 g) is first crushed or pounded and then poured over with boiling water. Then, when the tea is left to stand covered for 10-15 minutes, it can finally be passed through a tea strainer.
Daily, 1-3 cups of the tea should be drunk, and for infants and young children, 1 teaspoon of the infusion is added to each of the bottle feeds.
When should caraway not be used?
Caraway should not be taken in cases of known hypersensitivity to caraway or other umbelliferous plants. These include:
- Cumin
- Celery
- Parsley
- Carrots
- Anise
- Coriander
It is not advisable to take cumin for a long time and in high doses, as this can lead to kidney and liver damage in rare cases.
How should you store caraway seeds?
Caraway should be stored in a dry place, away from light, in tight-fitting glass or metal containers.
