Carprofen is commercially available in the form of tablets, chewable tablets, and as a solution for injection. It has been approved in many countries since 1998.
Structure and properties
Carprofen (C15H12ClNO2, Mr = 273.7 g/mol) is an arylpropionic acid derivative. It exists as a white crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water. Carprofen is a racemate.
Effects
Carprofen (ATCvet QM01AE91) has analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory properties. The effects are due to inhibition of cyclooxygenase and prostaglandin synthesis.
Indications
Carprofen is used to relieve pain and treat inflammation in dogs, cattle, and cats.
Contraindications
Carprofen is contraindicated in hypersensitivity; animals with impaired cardiac, hepatic, or renal function; gastrointestinal ulceration; dehydration; hypovolemia; low blood pressure; and pregnant or lactating animals. For complete precautions, see the drug label.
Interactions
Other NSAIDs, renal toxicants, and high protein drugs should not be administered concomitantly.
Adverse effects
Possible adverse effects rarely include gastric and intestinal ulcers, renal or hepatic disorders.
