Cataract: Therapy

General measures

  • Nicotine restriction (abstaining from tobacco use) – early smoking cessation reduces the likelihood in men that cataract surgery will be necessary
  • Aim for normal weight! Determination of BMI (body mass index, body mass index) or body composition by means of electrical impedance analysis and, if necessary, participation in a medically supervised weight loss program.
  • Review of permanent medication due topossible effect on the existing disease.
  • Avoidance of environmental stress:
    • Exposure to electromagnetic energy – lightning star
    • Radiation exposure – radiation cataract, e.g. by infrared radiation (glass blower) or with intense sunlight (UV-A, UV-B) → limit or avoid sunbathing as well as visits to solariums.

Regular checkups

  • Regular ophthalmological check-ups

Nutritional medicine

  • Nutritional counseling based on nutritional analysis
  • Nutritional recommendations according to a mixed diet taking into account the disease at hand. This means, among other things:
    • A total of 5 servings of fresh vegetables and fruit daily (≥ 400 g; 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruit).
    • Once or twice a week fresh sea fish, i.e. fatty marine fish (omega-3 fatty acids) such as salmon, herring, mackerel.
    • High-fiber diet (whole grains, vegetables).
  • Observance of the following special nutritional recommendations:
    • Consumption of foods rich in antioxidant vitamins (e.g., vitamin C). The crystalline lens of healthy patients shows a significantly lower concentration of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) compared with patients with cataract. In the eye, constant contact with sunlight produces free radicals, which are neutralized by ascorbic acid, preventing oxidation of sensitive proteins.
  • Supplementation of 300-600 mg of vitamin C per day reduces the risk of cataract by a factor of four!
