Cerebral Atherosclerosis: Classification

Arterial occlusive disease of the extracranial (“outside the skull”) or intracranial cerebral arteries can be classified as follows:

  1. Asymptomatic stenosis
  2. Transient ischemic attack (TIA) – symptoms of apoplexy that resolve within 24 hours at the latest [see below TIA].
  3. Apoplexy (stroke) [see below Apoplexy]

Extracranial cerebral arteries: Arteries between the aortic arch and the base of the skull (supraaortic branches of the aortic arch)Intracranial (” within the cranial cavity”) cerebral arteries: Circulus arteriosus Willisi and outgoing cerebral arteries.
