Coltsfoot: Effect and Side Effects

In the area of the throat, larynx and trachea are very sensitive cough receptors that respond, among other things, to mechanical stimuli and cold drafts. The mucilage contained in coltsfoot forms a protective layer so that the mucous membrane is less irritated and the coughing irritation decreases.

Side effects of coltsfoot

Some of the pyrrozilidine alkaloids have hepatotoxic and carcinogenic (cancerogenic) effects, which is why coltsfoot leaves are no longer allowed on the market in Austria and Denmark, for example.

In Germany, a different regulation has been adopted. Coltsfoot leaves may be sold and used here, but the use has been limited in time and quantity to a maximum daily dose of 10 micrograms of pyrrozilidine alkaloids.

Interactions with other agents are not currently known.
