Crotamiton was available in many countries as a cream and lotion for external use (Eurax). It was approved in 1946. In 2012, its distribution was discontinued.
Structure and properties
Crotamiton (C13H17NO, Mr = 203.3 g/mol) exists as a colorless to pale yellow, oily liquid with a slight amine odor. It is sparingly soluble in water and miscible with ethanol 96%. Crotamiton is a mixture of the – and -isomer.
Effects
Crotamiton (ATC D04AX) has miticidal, bacteriostatic, and antipruritic properties and has a preventive effect against bacterial superinfections.
Indications
For the treatment of scabies and the relief of associated sequelae such as purulent dermatitis and pruritus. Crotamiton is also approved for pruritus in some countries.
Dosage
According to the package leaflet. The drug is applied to the entire surface of the body, excluding the face and scalp, in the evening after a bath for the treatment of scabies. Application during 3-5 days.

Interactions
No drug-drug interactions are known to date.
Adverse effects
Possible adverse effects include local reactions such as itching, rash, and hypersensitivity reactions. Contact allergic reactions have been reported.
