Degeneration of pigment spots

In the vast majority of cases, pigmentation marks on the face are harmless pigmentation disorders. In some cases, however, they can also be the expression of a malignant process or degenerate over time. It is often difficult for laypersons to judge whether this is the case, which is why people with many pigmentation spots in particular should seek regular check-ups from their dermatologist.

Nevertheless, you should also keep an eye on your skin yourself and check it for conspicuous pigment spots from time to time. The ABCD-rule can help here: Also noticeable are marks that bleed, itch or change in shape and size. If in doubt, one should not be afraid to consult a doctor.

  • A(Asymmetry): especially in early stages melanomas are often characterized by an irregular contour.
  • B(Limitation): this is one of the most important anomalies. The transition between melanoma and healthy, normally pigmented skin is often fluid or jagged.
  • C(Colour): even a conspicuous shade can be indicative of a degeneration of pigmented spots. Melanomas often have a very dark, black to bluish or even grey color.
  • D(diameter): Pigment spots with a diameter of more than two millimeters require special attention and should be clarified more precisely in case of doubt.

Prevention

Since pigment disorders in the face are very often genetically or hormonally determined, it is not always possible to prevent them. However, if there is a possibility that taking the pill is the cause of the pigment spots, switching to non-hormonal contraceptive methods can lead to an improvement or even disappearance of the pigment spots. In very rare cases, taking vitamin B12 and folic acid can also help to prevent pigment spots.

However, the most important preventive measure remains the use of sun creams or other sun protection. Not only on vacation, but also in everyday life, care should be taken that the skin is not exposed to strong sunlight for too long. This not only prevents the development of pigment spots, but also other skin diseases and above all skin cancer.
