Medical history (history of the patient) represents an important component in the diagnosis of pulpitis (inflammation of the dental nerve).

- Is there a frequent occurrence of dental disease in your family?
Social anamnesis
Current medical history/systemic medical history (somatic and psychological complaints).
- What symptoms have you noticed in the teeth?
- Stinging, short-lasting stimulus-dependent (second) pain to hot, cold, sweet, sour, which can be precisely localized
- Pulsating, throbbing, persistent, stimulus outlasting pain on heat stimuli, which radiates; night pain
- Do you grind your teeth at night?
Vegetative anamnesis incl. nutritional anamnesis.
- Do you pay attention to adequate dental hygiene?
- Do you eat a balanced diet?
- Do you smoke? If so, how many cigarettes, cigars or pipes per day?
- Do you drink alcohol? If yes, what drink(s) and how many glasses per day?
Self history incl. medication history.
- Pre-existing conditions (injuries; caries; diseases of the periodontium).
