Dental Neuritis (Pulpitis): Medical History

Medical history (history of the patient) represents an important component in the diagnosis of pulpitis (inflammation of the dental nerve).

Family history

  • Is there a frequent occurrence of dental disease in your family?

Social anamnesis

Current medical history/systemic medical history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • What symptoms have you noticed in the teeth?
    • Stinging, short-lasting stimulus-dependent (second) pain to hot, cold, sweet, sour, which can be precisely localized
    • Pulsating, throbbing, persistent, stimulus outlasting pain on heat stimuli, which radiates; night pain
  • Do you grind your teeth at night?

Vegetative anamnesis incl. nutritional anamnesis.

  • Do you pay attention to adequate dental hygiene?
  • Do you eat a balanced diet?
  • Do you smoke? If so, how many cigarettes, cigars or pipes per day?
  • Do you drink alcohol? If yes, what drink(s) and how many glasses per day?

Self history incl. medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (injuries; caries; diseases of the periodontium).
  • Operations
  • Allergies

Medication history

  • Cortisone (including steroids)
  • Hormonal contraceptives (“pill”).
  • Hormone replacement therapy (estrogens)
  • Tricyclic antidepressants
