Dexketoprofen

Products

Dexketoprofen is commercially available as film-coated tablets and as a solution for injection (Ketesse). It has been approved in many countries since 2000. In 2017, a fixed combination with tramadol was registered; see Tramadol Dexketoprofen (Skudexa).

Structure and properties

Dexketoprofen (C16H14O3, Mr = 254.3) is the active -enantiomer of ketoprofen, which exists as a racemate. It is present in the drug product as dexketoprofen trometamol (see also under trometamol).

Effects

Dexketoprofen (ATC M01AE17) has analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory properties. The effects are due to inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis by inhibition of cyclooxygenase.

Indications

For symptomatic treatment of pain.

Dosage

According to the SmPC. Tablets may be taken up to three times daily (every 8 hours). For acute pain, the drug should be administered 30 minutes before eating because food delays absorption. The duration of treatment should be kept as short as possible.

Contraindications

Numerous precautions must be observed when using NSAIDs. Full details can be found in the drug label.

Adverse effects

The most common possible adverse effects include headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and dyspepsia. As with all NSAIDs, serious side effects may rarely occur.
