Diagnosis

The diagnosis begins with a detailed survey of the exact complaints and symptoms. This is followed by an inspection and examination of the feet. Skin complaints, allergic reactions, redness, rashes, swellings and bruises can already be detected externally and can provide further indications of local causes.

If the feet are noticeably cold and dry, however, vascular or nerve damage can also be the cause. If this is suspected, further accompanying symptoms that may be typical for the respective disease must be investigated. This can be followed by a blood test, in which, among other things, special vitamin levels, but also sugar levels can be determined.

As a non-invasive and simple diagnostic measure, the blood circulation in the leg can be examined with a so-called “Doppler ultrasound“. If there is a suspicion of damage to the nerves away from the body, special neurological examinations can be used to test sensitivity. In particular, the sensations of pain, vibration and temperature are checked. These are limited at an early stage in polyneuropathy.
