Diclofenac injection solution is available from several suppliers (Voltaren, generics). It has been approved in many countries since 1975.
Structure and properties
Diclofenac (C14H11Cl2NO2, Mr = 296.15 g/mol) is present in the drug as diclofenac sodium, a white to slightly yellowish, crystalline and weakly hygroscopic powder, which are sparingly soluble in water. Within the NSAIDs, diclofenac belongs to the arylacetic acid or phenylacetic acid derivatives.
Effects
Diclofenac (ATC M01AB05) has analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory properties. The effects are due to inhibition of the enzyme cyclooxygenase and reduced synthesis of prostaglandins. Diclofenac has a short half-life of one to three hours.
Indications
For the treatment of pain and inflammatory conditions of various causes.
Dosage
According to the SmPC. The drug may be administered intramuscularly, subcutaneously, or intravenously (infused), depending on the preparation.

Adverse effects
The most common potential adverse effects of solution for injection include:
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, flatulence, lack of appetite.
- Reactions, pain and induration at the injection site.
- Fluid retention, edema, hypertension.
- Skin rash
- Headache, drowsiness, dizziness
