Dimethicone

Products

Dimethicone is commercially available in many countries as a drug in the form of capsules as a fixed combination with other active ingredients (Carboticon). It is also present in lice remedies, cosmetics and technical agents and has been registered since 1964.

Structure and properties

Dimethicone (C2H6OSi)n exists as a clear, colorless liquid of varying viscosity and is practically insoluble in water. It is a surface-active polydimethylsiloxilane obtained by hydrolysis and polycondensation of dichlorodimethylsilane and chlorotrimethylsilane. The different types are distinguished by their nominal viscosity, which is expressed by the number after the name of the substance.

Effects

Dimethicone (ATC A03AX13) is chemically and biologically inert and is neither metabolized nor absorbed, but exerts its effects locally in the digestive tract. It is defoaming by altering surface tension and eliminates flatulence. In the treatment of head lice, the insects are physically killed.

Indications

Internally to treat flatulence and gas accumulation in the gastrointestinal tract and before diagnostic tests. Externally for the treatment of head lice.
