These symptoms indicate a foreign body in the lungs (foreign body aspiration)
Immediately after choking, a strong irritation of the throat usually occurs. This is an expression of a protective reflex of the body that tries to transport the foreign body out of the lungs again. If the foreign body blocks part of the airways, a whistling sound may be heard when breathing in or out.
In addition, a persistent irritation of the throat may occur. It is not uncommon for small injuries to occur in the windpipe, which can cause slight blood admixture when coughing. In the worst case, the foreign body aspiration may result in shortness of breath.
How does the doctor diagnose a foreign body in the lungs?
The diagnosis of a foreign body in the lungs is usually very easy due to a clear anamnesis. If this is not successful, the lung can be listened to. In this case, one can hear attenuated breathing sounds or a whistling sound if the foreign body blocks access to a part of the lung.
If one is not sure whether a foreign body is being aspirated, an additional X-ray can be taken. On this x-ray, the foreign body can usually be easily recognized due to its density.
