Dipyrithione is commercially available as a shampoo (Crimanex). It has been approved in many countries since 1987.

Structure and properties

Dipyrithione (C10H8N2O2S2, Mr = 252.3 g/mol) is structurally related to zinc pyrithione.

Effects

Dipyrithione (ATC D11AC08) is effective against dandruff by leading to normalization of skin formation.

Indications

For the treatment of dandruff, greasy hair, and scalp eczema.

Dosage

According to the package insert. The shampoo is used 1-2 times a week, the tincture is applied to the scalp twice a day.

Contraindications

Dipyrithione is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity. It should not be placed in the eyes. For complete precautions, see the drug label.

No drug-drug interactions are known to date.
