Dosage | Zyprexa® Velotab

Dosage

Zyprexa® Velotab is available as tablets with 5 mg, 10 mg, 15 mg or 20 mg of the active ingredient olanzapine. The exact dosage and duration of the treatment is determined in consultation with the doctor. Depending on an improvement or possibly also a worsening of the symptoms, the dose can be reduced or increased. This is then done by order of the treating physician. If the patient has impaired liver and/or kidney functions, lower doses should be used.

Side effects

At the beginning of treatment with Zyprexa® Velotab, dizziness may occur after getting up. Usually, however, these disappear again by themselves. In addition, the use of Zyprexa® Velotab can lead to reduced movement control.

Responsible for the loss of function is the blockage of receptors in the brain, which are responsible, among other things, for the regulation of movements. These uncontrolled movements mainly affect the face. In addition, weight gain and drowsiness can occur.

An increased release of the hormone prolactin can lead to breast growth and, in women, to milk secretion. Changes in blood values often occur, including an increase in liver values, as well as in blood sugar, blood fat and cholesterol values. Also blood pressure and pulse values can vary as side effect of Zyprexa® Velotab.

Occasionally it comes to water retention in the body (edema), which becomes apparent in swollen hands and/or feet. Sensitivity to light is also one of the known side effects. In addition, constipation, dry mouth and problems with urination can occur.

Occasionally, blood clots (thrombi) may also form in the veins, especially in the legs. Rarely rashes or hair loss occur as part of the side effects of Zyprexa® Velotab.Older or demented patients often experience walking insecurities, resulting in an increased risk of falling. This is also associated with an increased body temperature, urinary incontinence and an increased risk of strokes and pneumonia.

Taking Zyprexa® Velotab in existing Parkinson’s disease aggravates the symptoms of the disease, such as tremor or muscle stiffness. Seizures rarely occur. This is usually only the case if seizures (epilepsy) have already occurred in the past. Since Zyprexa® Velotab can lead to temporary clouding of consciousness, driving vehicles and operating machines should be avoided in this case.
