Double Vision, Diplopia: Examination

A comprehensive clinical examination is the basis for selecting further diagnostic steps:

  • General physical examination – including blood pressure, pulse, body weight, height.
  • Ophthalmological examination
    • Ocular motility
    • Functionality of the external eye muscles (Hess umbrella test).
    • Ability of the eyes to fixate a specific point (cover test).
    • Reflexes of the cornea (flashlight test).
    • Visual acuity determination (determination of visual acuity).
  • Neurological examination – including verification of consciousness, sensitivity, motor function, reflexes.
