Double Vision, Diplopia: Medical History

Medical history (history of the patient) is an important component in the diagnosis of diplopia (double vision).

Family history

  • What is the general health of your relatives?
  • Are there any diseases in your family that are common?
  • Are there any hereditary diseases in your family?

Social history

  • What is your profession?
  • Are you exposed to harmful working substances in your profession?
  • Is there any evidence of psychosocial stress or strain due to your family situation?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • How long have these changes existed?
  • Was there a trigger for the appearance of the double vision?
  • Have the double images been present continuously since or do the double images occur intermittently?
  • Are the double images bilocular?
  • Do the double images only occur with certain viewing direction?
  • Do any other symptoms occur? Headache, dizziness, etc.?

Vegetative anamnesis incl. nutritional anamnesis.

  • Do you drink alcohol at an increased rate? If so, what drink(s) and how many glasses of it per day?
  • Do you use drugs? If yes, which drugs and how often per day or per week?

Self history incl. medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (neurological diseases, eye diseases).
  • Surgeries (eye surgeries, brain surgeries).
  • Radiotherapy
  • Vaccination status
  • Allergies
  • Environmental history

Medication history

  • Sedatives such as benzodiazepines
  • Opiates
