Effect of St. John’s wort

Effect

Approximately 20 years ago, the testing of the clinical effects of St. John’s wort was started. In the meantime, the effectiveness has been proven by conventional medicine. The effect of the St. John’s wort remedy only becomes apparent after an intake period of two to four weeks.

In total, the treatment is expected to last several months. The treatment of depression with antidepressants is still difficult today, as the biochemical changes of depression cannot be precisely determined. In a depressed patient, certain messenger substances (neurotransmitters) are not available in sufficient quantities.

This disrupts the metabolism between the nerve cells. Such messenger substances are among others: Antidepressants have an effect on the above-mentioned messenger substances. In the case of St. John’s wort extract, it is assumed that a collection of different ingredients have an effect on depression.

St. John’s wort thus influences the messenger substances of the brain in various ways. Which ingredient plays a significant role in this influence is still unclear today. It is only known that St. John’s wort actively intervenes in the biochemical processes of depression. The composition of St. John’s wort extract from different components gives it its antidepressant effect.
