Fat Pencil for the Skin

Products

Among the best-known fat sticks in many countries are, for example, Dermophil India, the Peru Stick and Tuc. They contain about 20 to 23 g of the preparation, making them much larger than lip balms (about 4 to 5 g). Like them, they can be made by yourself. To do this, the ingredients are usually melted and poured into the sleeve.

Structure and properties

Grease pencils consist of a lipophilic base with a solid consistency containing, for example, petrolatum, kerosene, hard kerosene, fatty oils such as castor oil and waxes such as lanolin. Active ingredients such as essential oils, camphor, Peru balsam, other herbal ingredients and sometimes local anesthetics are incorporated into this base. The composition of the pencils varies.

Effects

The oily base forms a protective film on the skin, which relieves pain and retains water in the skin, thus hydrating and promoting wound healing. The active ingredients have additional analgesic, antiseptic and wound healing properties, among others.

Fields of application

For the prevention and treatment of skin cracks, chapped, dry skin, abrasions and chilblains.

Dosage

According to the package insert. Twist out the stick slightly and apply locally several times a day as needed. Do not use on large areas. For cracked skin and chapped skin, it is recommended to apply the pen in the evening before going to bed and also apply a bandage, such as a gauze bandage that adheres to itself.

Contraindications

The pens are contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity. Some pens should not be used in children, such as preparations containing camphor. Not all lipsticks are suitable for use on the lips.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include allergic reactions and other skin reactions. Peru balsam is a known allergen.
