Hypnosis is sometimes used for patients with severe anxiety. The procedure allows for anxiety- and pain-free treatment – although not without additional anesthetics. During hypnosis, the rational part of the brain is “turned off.” Everything that is unpleasant is blanked out at that moment. Dentists who use this type of treatment must first complete special additional training.
And otherwise
- Simple means of relaxation can also help to reduce anxiety and thus often the sensation of pain. For example, the patient can distract himself with music from the Discman/Mp3 player and agree on a sign with the dentist to signal pain. The dentist then interrupts the treatment. If the patient can trust this, he or she is much more relaxed and thus less sensitive to pain. Especially patients who have experienced several times that dental treatments are painful, can thus overcome their fear of pain.
- Against the pain help herbal remedies: brushing the painful area with clove oil, chewing dried rosemary leaves or gargling with sage tea or diluted tea tree oil.
- If you are inclined to homeopathy, you can also try the following: Until the visit to the dentist, sudden shooting in, swelling and subsiding toothache can be relieved with Ballodonna, persistent pain with Hyperuricum (D6 5 globules hourly). Against the fear of visiting the dentist, take Aconitum D6 – 5 globules the night before and 5 globules shortly before the visit. After the visit to the dentist, you can take Arnica and Hyperuricum alternately (each D6 5 globules hourly) – this relieve the pain even after the anesthesia wears off, soothes the dental nerve, promotes wound healing and stops bleeding.
