Finafloxacin was approved in the United States in 2015 in the form of ear drops (Xtoro). The drug has not yet been registered in many countries.
Structure and properties
Finafloxacin (C20H19FN4O4, Mr = 398.4 g/mol) is a fluoroquinolone. It exists as a white to yellow powder or crystals and is sparingly soluble in water.
Effects
Finafloxacin has antibacterial properties. The effects are due to inhibition of bacterial topoisomerase II, DNA gyrase, and topoisomerase IV, which are required in DNA replication, transcription, and DNA repair.

For the treatment of otitis externa (inflammation of the external auditory canal) caused by or .
Dosage
According to the SmPC. Drops are instilled into the affected ear twice daily for seven days. See also under Administering ear drops.
Contraindications
Finafloxacin is contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity. For complete precautions, see the drug label.
Adverse Effects
The most common possible adverse effects include itching of the ear and nausea.
