Foot malpositions | Morbus Ledderhose – exercises

Foot malpositions

As mentioned above, the toes form the mobile, non-fixed attachment of the plantar fascia. Due to the formation of nodules and shortening of the tendon, the toes can now become curved, bending to the chronic pull. This results in a foot malposition.

The foot malpositions, which are congenital in most cases, can therefore also be acquired through diseases such as Ledderhose disease. Foot malpositions in general are any deviations from the normal position of the foot. However, it requires a rather strong expression of the Ledderhosen contracture to cause a malpositioning of the foot or toes.

The problem that arises is that a foot malposition changes the gait pattern, which can lead to subsequent complaints of joints and muscle chains as well as stress in everyday life. In addition, other structures in the foot also adapt to a chronic malposition, such as the bones. Footwear puts pressure on the curved bones (hallux valgus/hallux rigidus) and in the long term leads to inflammation and painful pressure points, which in turn has an effect on the gait, and thus on everyday stress and quality of life.

Further measures

Other measures in the treatment of Ledderhose disease include ice sanding, gentle massages, passive stretching, shock wave therapy, electrotherapy and ultrasound applications. Tapes can be applied temporarily to relieve the strain. Orthoses and shoe insoles also relieve pressure from the plantar fascia and, above all, facilitate long walks. The doctor can also prescribe anti-inflammatory medication. If the nodules are too large or if conservative therapy is unsuccessful and causes severe restrictions in gait and everyday life, surgical removal should be considered.

Summary

The lederhosen contracture of the strong tendon in the sole of the foot is a chronic rheumatic disease with no known cause. Small nodules form in the tissue and can cause foot malpositions and an obstruction of the gait pattern. The disease cannot be cured, but there are various conventional measures that alleviate the symptoms and prevent subsequent complaints. In severe cases, surgery is considered in order to maintain or restore the quality of life in everyday life.
