Heberden’s Arthrosis: Therapy

General measures

  • Nicotine restriction (refraining from tobacco use).
  • Avoidance of:
    • Overloading of the joints, for example, by competitive and high-performance sports or long-lasting heavy physical loads, for example, in the profession (construction workers, especially floor layers).

Conventional non-surgical therapy methods

  • X-ray stimulation treatment (Orthovolt therapy) – for pain management in patients of middle age and older.
  • Radiosynoviorthesis (RSO, from radioactive isotope, synovial joint mucosa, orthosis restoration; RSO for short) is one of the nuclear medicine procedures used therapeutically in rheumatology and orthopedics for the treatment of chronic inflammatory joint diseases. The restoration of the synovium is based on the use of beta-emitters (radionucleotides). Beta radiation is an ionizing radiation that occurs during a radioactive decay, beta decay. These radionuclides are applied into the joint cavity so that an existing inflammatory process can be inhibited (stopped). The use of the procedure is thus an alternative to surgical removal of the synovium (synovial membrane) and is considered a suitable pain therapy.

Nutritional medicine

  • Nutritional counseling based on nutritional analysis
  • Nutritional recommendations according to a mixed diet taking into account the disease at hand. This means, among other things:
    • Daily total of 5 servings of fresh vegetables and fruits (≥ 400 g; 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruits).
    • Once or twice a week fresh sea fish, i.e. fatty marine fish (omega-3 fatty acids) such as salmon, herring, mackerel.
    • High-fiber diet (whole grains, vegetables).
  • Selection of appropriate food based on the nutritional analysis
  • See also under “Therapy with micronutrients (vital substances)” – if necessary, taking a suitable dietary supplement.
  • Detailed information on nutritional medicine you will receive from us.

Physical therapy (including physiotherapy)

  • Heat/cold applications (especially cold applications/cryotherapy).
  • Ultrasound, electrotherapy – for pain therapy
  • Physiotherapy – to improve mobility.
