Herpangina: Examination

A comprehensive clinical examination is the basis for selecting further diagnostic steps:

  • General physical examination – including blood pressure, pulse, body temperature, body weight, body height; furthermore:
    • Inspection (viewing).
      • Skin, mucous membranes, mouth and pharynx (anterior palatal arch, hard and soft palate, uvula (uvula), pharyngeal wall andtonsils/palatine tonsils [whitish, gray vesicles (diameter: 1-2 mm) surrounded by a pale halo; these leave yellowish ulcerations (boils) with a red halo after bursting]
    • Inspection and palpation (palpation) of the neck [due topossible sequelae: swelling of the parotid gland (parotid gland) unilaterally or bilaterally possible].
    • Auscultation (listening) of the heart [due topossible sequelae: Myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle), pericarditis (inflammation of the pericardium)]
  • ENT medical examination – including endoscopy of the oral cavity and pharynx (throat).
  • Neurological examination – on suspicion of possible secondary disease: e.g. meningitis (meningitis).
