Hexamidine eye drops have been approved in many countries since 1994 (Desomedin, Desomedin DD, Monodoses). The disinfectant is also present in skin creams (Imacort, Imazol) and cosmetics.
Structure and properties
Hexamidine (C20H26N4O, Mr = 354.5 g/mol) is present in drugs as hexamidine diisetionate, a white to pale yellow powder that is sparingly soluble in water. It belongs structurally to the aromatic diamidines.
Effects
Hexamidine (ATC S01AX08) has antiseptic, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties. It is effective against Gram-positive bacteria and amoebae.
Indications
For the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis, inflammation of the conjunctiva and cornea, and inflammation of the lacrimal sac and lacrimal ducts. For disinfection before and after operations on the eye.
Dosage
According to the professional information. 2 drops are placed in the eye 4-6 times daily. See also under Administering eye drops.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to benzamidine or hexamidine.

Interactions
No drug-drug interactions have been reported to date. The cation hexamidine diisetionate is incompatible with anions.
Adverse effects
Possible adverse effects include local reactions such as irritation and sensitive eyes. Hexamidine has allergenic potential and may rarely cause allergic reactions and allergic contact dermatitis.
