History of Coca Cola®

Originally, Coca Cola was developed as a remedy. Find out how the medicine became a drink and whether it can be concluded from the origin that cola is healthy here.

History of Coca Cola

The triumph of Coca Cola began in May 1886 in a drugstore called “Jacob’s Pharmacy”. John S. Pemberton, a pharmacist, had made a new type of tonic from the coca plant and the cola nut. He sold the tonic mixed with soda water as a medicine for headaches and fatigue under the name Coca-Cola. However, Coca-Cola quickly became a refreshing and thirst-quenching drink rather than a remedy.

In 1892, “The Coca-Cola Company” was born, and then in 1916, the bottle took on its unmistakable hipster look and Coca-Cola lettering, which remains to this day. Over several decades, the slogan changed and new flavors were added, but the Coca Cola recipe always remained the same.

Since 1929, the drink is also available in Germany

Coca Cola: healthy or not?

Even today, you can take Coca Cola in an emergency – because of the high sugar content – in conjunction with salt sticks against diarrhea, but Cola can certainly no longer be called a medicine.

Coca Cola is a fast energy supplier due to its high sugar content. Sugar not only puts us in a good mood, it is also the most important source of energy for our muscle, brain and nerve cells.

But watch out: Sugar is also responsible for making us gain weight. Although it does not have as many calories as fat, it has the same effect when consumed in large quantities – we gain weight! Not to forget, sugar is also harmful for the teeth, because it can cause caries.

The golden rule of thumb: no matter what it is, too much of it is always bad!
