HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)

Products

The drug used to prevent HIV with medication (pre-exposure prophylaxis, PrEP) is available in the form of film-coated tablets (Truvada). PrEP is short for pre-exposure prophylaxis.

Structure and properties

The following antiviral agents are contained in the drug product:

  • Emtricitabine (200 mg)
  • Tenofovirdisoproxil (245 mg)

Effects

Both ingredients (ATC J05AR03) have antiviral properties. They are reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). They inhibit the viral enzyme reverse transcriptase, which transcribes viral RNA into DNA and is important for viral replication.

Indications

In combination with safer sex practices for preexposure prophylaxis to reduce the risk of sexually acquired HIV-1 infection for persons at high risk.

Dosage

According to the SmPC. Tablets are taken once daily with a meal.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity
  • Use for PrEP in individuals with unknown or positive HIV-1 status.

Adverse effects
