How long does postoperative depression last?
No general statement can be made about the duration of postoperative depression. In some patients there is only a brief episode of depressive mood after the procedure. This often lasts only a few days to a few weeks.
In some cases, however, depression may occur after surgery, which persists for a long time and requires treatment with psychotherapy and, if necessary, medication. On the one hand, it is possible that a first depressive episode is triggered by the operation. On the other hand, people who have already suffered from depression may experience a recurrence of the symptoms after the operation.
The question of the duration of postoperative depression is complicated by the fact that many connections in this area are still unclear and further research is needed. In any case, it is advisable to seek help if the postoperative depression lasts longer (for example, more than two weeks). Contact persons can be, for example, the family doctor, a psychologist or a counseling center.
Postoperative depression is a serious clinical picture. In our society, unfortunately, psychological complaints are often placed behind physical well-being. Out of shame and fear of being stigmatized (“being pigeonholed”), many sufferers deny their suffering and thus enter a vicious circle.
It is therefore extremely important to distinguish between post-operative depression and normal fatigue. Only if timely treatment measures are taken there is a chance for improvement!
