Hyperglycemia (High Blood Sugar): Complications

The following are the most important diseases or complications that may be contributed to by hyperglycemia (high blood glucose):

Endocrine, nutritional, and metabolic diseases (E00-E90).

  • Diabetes mellitus (diabetes).
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis – form of coma diabeticum in which there are blood glucose levels > 250 mg/dl (> 13.9 mmol/l) with ketonuria/ketonemia, acidosis (blood hyperacidity) with pH < 7.3; occurs mainly in type 1 diabetes mellitus.
  • Hyperosmolar coma – form of coma diabeticum in which there is hyperglycemia > 600 mg/dl (> 33.3 mmol/l), hyperosmolality > 320 mosmol/l and minimal metabolic acidosis (blood hyperacidity) and few/absent ketone bodies in the blood; occurs mainly in diabetes mellitus type 2.
  • Hypertriglyceridemia (lipid metabolism disorder; too high triglyceride levels in the blood).

Psyche – nervous system (F00-F99; G00-G99)

  • Psychosis
