According to current doctrine, an incisional hernia (scar hernia) should be operated on.
Incisional hernia surgery can be performed as conventional open surgery or laparoscopically (via laparoscopy).
Surgical Procedures
- Treatment by direct suture; indication: smaller scar hernias (< 2-4 cm).
- Implantation of a synthetic mesh (open or laparoscopic technique).
- Sublay mesh position (retromuscular/posterior to muscle).
- Underlay mesh position (preperitoneal/before the peritoneum).
Postoperative complications and recurrence (recurrence of disease) are dependent on the size of the hernial orifice.
The rate of mesh-related complications is directly proportional to the implanted mesh size.
Approximately 10-14 days after surgery, resumption of normal physical activities such as housework, light gardening, bicycling and driving is possible. Lifting of weights over 10 kg should be done after 6 weeks at the earliest.
Postoperatively, wearing an abdominal bandage for about 6 weeks is recommended. This can already be omitted at night two weeks after surgery.
