If itching occurs all over the body, you should not hesitate to see a doctor. The causes behind the discomfort may be harmless – for example, stress or nervousness come into question. However, itching all over the body can also be triggered by serious diseases such as diabetes, diseases of the kidneys or liver, and hyperthyroidism. Prolonged itching should therefore definitely be clarified by a doctor.
When the scalp itches
Behind a strong itching of the scalp can hide an infestation with lice, a dry scalp or dandruff. Likewise, skin diseases such as eczema come into question as a cause. Since lice infestation is contagious, you should consult a doctor if in doubt about itchy scalp – this is especially true if children complain about a very itchy scalp. The doctor will then give you appropriate tips for treating the lice infestation.
If a dry scalp is behind the itching, it is best to use a special shampoo from the pharmacy in the future. In addition, it is recommended to wash the hair only every other day and not to use water that is too hot – this additionally dries out the scalp. You should also avoid hot blow-drying and hair dyes for some time. In case of dandruff, the use of a special anti-dandruff shampoo is recommended.
If the itching of the scalp persists for a longer period of time despite these measures, internal diseases must be ruled out by a doctor. Psychological triggers – for example, stress – should also be considered in the case of prolonged itching.
Itching of the legs
Itching on the legs is usually caused by excessively dry skin. By using pH-neutral washing gels when showering, the itching can usually already be alleviated. In addition, the skin on the legs should not be rubbed off after showering, but only carefully dabbed. Afterwards, the legs are best rubbed carefully with a greasy cream.
If itching on the legs occurs together with a skin rash, an allergy or a skin disease is probably behind the complaints. Then you should definitely see a doctor to have the exact cause clarified.
