Leishmaniasis: Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of leishmaniasis.

Family history

Social history

  • Have you been on a trip abroad within the last year? If so, where were you on vacation?
  • Do you work at the airport?
  • Have you had contact with animals such as dogs and rodents brought from endemic areas (tropics, subtropics)?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • What symptoms have you noticed?
  • How long have these symptoms been present?
  • Do you have a fever? If so, for how long?
  • Do you suffer from diarrhea?
  • Do you feel sluggish?
  • Can you remember an insect bite?
  • Have you noticed any changes in the skin or mucous membranes?

Vegetative anamnesis incl. nutritional anamnesis.

  • Have you unintentionally lost body weight?

  • Pre-existing conditions
  • Operations
  • Allergies
  • Pregnancies – pregnant women are more likely to be attacked by mosquitoes
