The following symptoms and complaints may indicate leptospirosis (Weil disease):
Symptoms of the anicteric form of progression (form of progression without jaundice).
- High fever, chills.
- Myalgia (muscle pain), especially affecting the calves, back, and abdomen (stomach)
- Arthralgia (pain in the limbs)
- Cephalgia (headache)
- Photophobia (photophobia)
- Sore throat
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea (diarrhea)
- States of confusion
- Coughing
- Chest pain (chest pain)
- Hemoptysis (coughing up blood)
- Conjunctivitis (conjunctivitis)
Symptoms of icteric progression (Weil’s disease) (progression with jaundice).
- Icterus (jaundice) – occurs in circa two-thirds of all cases (Weil disease).
- Exanthem (skin rash), can occur in many ways.
- Renal dysfunction up to renal failure.
- Blood clotting disorder with epistaxis (nosebleeds), petechiae/purpura (skin bleeding).
- Liver dysfunction up to liver failure.
- Pain in the right upper abdomen
- Pulmonary dysfunction to respiratory failure.
In Weil disease, symptoms can range from inapparent to fulminant course. In circa 90% of sufferers with symptoms, a mild form without icterus is present.
