Costs for a crown extension

In general, the costs of a surgical crown extension are not covered by the statutory health insurance companies. If the conditions for a normal filling are no longer given, the tooth must be extracted, i.e. surgically removed. However, if the patient has a vested interest in preserving this severely destroyed tooth, the private fee schedule for dentists (GOZ) may be applied to him/her. The costs are between 80 and 300,-€, depending on effort, degree of difficulty and federal state.

What are the risks?

On the one hand, the risks associated with a properly performed surgical crown extension are relatively low, as this is still a minimally invasive procedure. On the other hand, there are the usual risks that can occur with any surgical procedure. These would be, for example, an infection of the surgical area (bone, gums), post-operative bleeding, pain, as well as a possible permanent numbness of the nerve in the surgical area and possibly swelling of the tissue, the gingiva (gums).

The pain to be expected during surgical crown lengthening is generally perceived as much less than that experienced during tooth removal. The reason for this is that the procedure is minimally invasive and only affects the surface of the tissue. Only complications such as an infection can cause greater pain. However, the role played by the individual should not be underestimated, since personal perception is difficult to scale. Duration of healing

The duration of healing depends on several factors. Essentially, however, it depends on the patient’s oral hygiene and the initial condition of the tissues involved (bones, oral mucosa). The degree of saliva secretion also plays an important role.Healthy tissue realistically heals completely within a period of seven to ten days. Pre-damaged tissue, for example as a result of radiation treatment or chemotherapy for tumors (including the use of bisphosphonates) is more brittle and therefore heals less well.
