Liver Enlargement (Hepatomegaly): Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of hepatomegaly (enlargement of the liver).

Family history

  • Is there a history of frequent liver disease in your family?

Social history

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • Have you noticed any yellowish discoloration of the skin or eyes?
  • Do you suffer from upper abdominal pain? If so, when do they occur?
  • Do you have a feeling of pressure in the right upper abdomen?
  • Are you quickly satiated when you eat?
  • How long have these symptoms been present?

Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.

  • Do you eat a balanced diet?
  • Do you drink alcohol? If so, what drink(s) and how many glasses per day?
  • Have you noticed any changes in bowel movements and/or urine?

Self history including medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (infections, liver disease, autoimmune diseases).
  • Surgeries
  • Allergies
  • Medication history
