Treatment/Therapy

The therapy mainly consists of a protection (e.g. do not put on the bent elbow) of the elbow region. A splinting or padding can be used as a support. If the symptoms get worse, the possibility of a surgical relief of the elbow should be considered.

There are two different procedures: One possibility is to transfer the nerve from the bone groove at the elbow to the crook of the elbow, where it lies more protected. In another, more gentle method, the tissue surrounding the nerve at the elbow is cut through. During the healing process, scarring, stretching and thus pressure relief occurs.

The minimally invasive endoscopic operation is new (only 2-3 cm instead of 10-12 cm long incision). However, it is not yet very widespread, as it requires specialized instruments. Paralysis or muscle weakness can be treated by specific training as part of occupational therapy. The aim is to regain strength and fine motor skills. It is important that the affected muscles are exercised regularly and continuously with special exercises.

Duration

Acute pain or tingling often improves quickly. However, depending on the extent of the damage, numbness, tingling and muscle weakness may take some time to subside completely. Complete recovery may take more than 12 months.

What are the chances of recovery?

If the therapy is started early, the chances of recovery are good. It is important to consistently relieve the nerve. The use of sparing, ergotherapy and physiotherapy, as well as surgical relief if necessary, generally allow for a good prognosis.

Of course always depending on the extent of the damage. As a rule, muscle function and sensation of the affected areas are regained.
