Megestrol Acetate

Megestrol is commercially available in the form of tablets for cats (Megecat). It has been approved in many countries since 1985.

Structure and properties

Megestrol acetate (C₂₄H₃₂O₄, M_r = 384.5 g/mol) is a synthetic progesterone derivative. It exists as a white crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water.

Effects

Megestrol acetate (ATCvet QG03DB02) has antiovulatory properties by inhibiting the release of FSH and preventing oestrus in queens.

Indications

For prevention of estrus (period when the female is ready to mate) and treatment of miliary eczema in female cats.
