Nurofen Melt Tablets: Effects

Brief overview

Effect

Nurofen melting tablets each contain 200 mg ibuprofen. This active ingredient is one of the so-called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It inhibits certain enzymes in the body and thus the formation of prostaglandins. These are messenger substances that are involved in the development of inflammation, pain and fever.

Nurofen melting tablets for children

Nurofen melting tablets 200 mg are approved for children six years and older. They melt in the mouth – so the tablets do not need to be swallowed, which is an advantage in children.

The melting tablets should not be given to children under six years of age. Ibuprofen preparations in more suitable dosage forms are available for them – for example, a juice (such as Nurofen Junior Fever and Pain Juice) instead of melting tablets.

If the use of Nurofen melting tablets in children (and adolescents) is necessary for more than three days, you should consult a doctor. The same applies if the symptoms worsen despite taking the medicine.

Dosage and intake

When using Nurofen 200 mg Lemon / Mint, follow the instructions in the package leaflet or the recommendations given to you by your doctor or pharmacist.

As a general rule, take Nurofen 200 mg Lemon / Mint tablets at the lowest dose that will relieve your symptoms. Keep the duration of use as short as possible.

These Nurofen tablets are neither chewable nor lozenges – you do not chew or suck them, but simply let them melt (disintegrate) on your tongue. It is not necessary to drink anything in addition.

Those who have a sensitive stomach should take the melting tablets together with a meal.

Dosage

The dosage of Nurofen melting tablets depends on the age or body weight (in children):

Children from six to nine years (approx. 20 – 28 kg) are given one melting tablet and – if necessary – one more at intervals of six to eight hours. Within 24 hours, a maximum of three tablets should be given (i.e. a maximum of 600 mg ibuprofen in total).

The recommended dosage of Nurofen melting tablets for over 12-year-olds and adults is one to two melting tablets every four to six hours. However, the total should not exceed six in a 24-hour period (i.e., a maximum of 1,200 mg of ibuprofen).

Duration of use

Nurofen melting tablets should only be taken for a short time. If children and adolescents do not feel better after three days or even feel worse, medical consultation is advisable.

The following applies to the duration of use of Nurofen tablets in adults: if the fever has not subsided after three days or the pain has not subsided after four days, a visit to the doctor is recommended.

When medical consultation is advisable beforehand

In certain cases, you should consult a doctor or pharmacist before using Nurofen Melting Tablets, such as:

  • infections: Nurofen may mask their signs (e.g., fever, pain) so that the infection may be discovered and treated late. If an infection persists or worsens while using Nurofen, see your doctor right away.
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
  • certain congenital disorders of hematopoiesis (e.g., acute intermittent
  • porphyria)
  • blood coagulation disorders
  • chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease)
  • impaired kidney or liver function
  • current heart diseases such as cardiac insufficiency (heart failure) and angina pectoris
  • history of heart attack, bypass surgery, stroke, TIA (“mini-stroke”) or peripheral arterial disease (CAD)
  • current or past heart disease or stroke in the family
  • high blood pressure
  • diabetes
  • high cholesterol
  • Smokers

Also, if you are currently trying to become pregnant, you should discuss the use of Nurofen Meltablets with a doctor or pharmacist in advance.
