Sick Building Syndrome: Examination

A comprehensive clinical examination is the basis for selecting further diagnostic steps:

  • General physical examination – including blood pressure, pulse, body weight, height; further:
    • Inspection (viewing).
      • Skin, mucous membranes, and eyes [burning eyes; xeroderma (dry skin); pruritus (itching); exanthema (rash)]
      • Nasopharynx (nasopharynx) [mucosal irritation; rhinitis (cold)]
      • Extremities [sensory disturbances]
    • Auscultation (listening) of the heart
    • Auscultation of the lungs [respiratory infections and coughs such as bronchitis; worsening of preexisting respiratory conditions such as bronchial asthma]
    • Palpation (palpation) of the abdomen (abdomen) (tenderness?, knocking pain?, coughing pain?, defensive tension?, hernial orifices?, renal bearing knocking pain?)
  • If necessary, neurological examination [due topossible symptoms:
    • Headache
    • Dizziness]
  • Psychiatric examination [due topossible symptom: depression][due todifferential diagnoses:
    • Burnout syndrome
    • Chronic overload
    • Depression]
