Nutrition in a metabolic syndrome

Besides a lack of exercise, nutrition plays a decisive role in the development of the metabolic syndrome. Those affected are often overnourished in the form of high-calorie food, which in addition is often too rich. In general, it can be said that a diet above the required daily allowance is present.

Depending on their constitution, every person has an energy requirement to maintain all physical functions. In addition, energy is required depending on the physical strain. If the supply of energy in the form of food is above the requirement, the person will gain weight; if the energy intake is below the required requirement, the person will lose weight as physical reserves are used up.

In the treatment of affluence syndrome, a change in diet is indispensable in addition to the recommendation of regular endurance exercise. Recommendations such as avoiding highly sweetened drinks like iced tea, cola or sweetened juices, as well as avoiding high-fat and sweet foods, play an important role here. In this context one often speaks of “hidden fats”.

These can be found in foods that do not initially appear to be particularly high in fat, such as nuts, croissants or chocolate bars. Nutritional counseling can be very helpful when changing your diet. Here the individual, physical need is determined and the food is adapted to it.

Diet in a metabolic syndrome

Dieting is an important part of the treatment of the metabolic syndrome. Only if weight is reduced through proper nutrition and sufficient exercise can blood pressure and blood lipids be lowered and the quality of life improved.This also reduces the risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke in the further course of the disease. The fat consumption should be kept as low as possible.

Mainly unsaturated fatty acids should be consumed. Foods with saturated fatty acids, such as sausage or other meat, should be avoided if possible or eaten only in small quantities. Also ready meals should not be consumed.

A sufficient amount of fiber is very important for a balanced diet. These are mainly contained in whole grain products, fruit and vegetables. It should be drunk sufficiently, i.e. at least 1.5 to 2 liters a day.
