Oak: Medicinal Uses

Stem plant

  • L., Fagaceae – English oak

Medicinal drug

Quercus cortex – Oak bark: The cut and dried bark of fresh, young branches of L., (Matt.) Liebl. or Willd. (PhEur). PhEur requires a minimum content of tannins. Quercus semen – acorn, rarely used as a medicinal raw material.

Ingredients

Tannins: catechin tannins and hydrolyzable tannins (proanthocyanidins), flavonoids.

Effects

  • Astringent: astringent and tanning.
  • Itch-relieving
  • Antiseptic

Fields of application

  • Inflammatory skin diseases, e.g., in the genital and anal area, intertrigo, itching, sweating.
  • Inflammation of the mouth and throat.

Dosage

  • Intake: daily dose 3 g drug.
  • Rinses, poultices, gargle solutions: 20 g drug to 1 L water
  • Partial and full baths: 5 g drug to 1 L water.
  • Duration of use no longer than 2-3 weeks

Contraindications

Do not use on the eye or if there is extensive skin damage
