Definition Marathon

The goal of the marathon is to complete the defined distance of 42.195 km in the shortest possible time. However, the marathon is much more than “running” this distance once, but requires months of preparation. A marathon runner prepares for a unique performance, but most of them are gripped by the fever of endurance sports and the marathon becomes part of the quality of life.

History

In 490 BC the messenger Pheidippides ran from Marathon to Athens to announce the victory over the Persians. With a greeting in his hand he is said to have collapsed dead of exhaustion in Athens. In 1896, at the Olympic Games in Athens, the marathon was held for the first time as a discipline over 40 km. Spyridon Louis was the winner with a time of 2:58:50 hours. In 1921, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) established the distance of 42.195 km as the official distance of a marathon run.
