Osteomyelitis of the Jaw Bones: Therapy

General measures

The following curative measures can be used for osteomyelitis of the jaw bones (osteomyelitis of the jaw bones):

Hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO).

In osteomyelitis of the jaw bones, a higher proportion of mixed infections with anaerobes or purely anaerobic infections can be assumed. Here, hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO; synonyms: hyperbaric oxygen therapy, HBO therapy; hyperbaric oxygen therapy; HBO2, HBOT) of the tissue is a useful adjunct to antibiosis (antibiotic therapy) and surgical therapy.

  • Indications:
    • Acute and secondary chronic osteomyelitis, especially in severe courses.
    • Refractory course
    • Primary chronic osteomyelitis
  • To improve the partial pressure of oxygen in osteomyelitic bone.
  • To activate osteoblast activity (“bone-building cells”).
  • For the regeneration of capillaries and soft tissue
  • Toxic effect on anaerobes
