Oxantel is commercially available as tablets and chewable tablets in combination preparations. It has been approved in many countries since 2008 and exclusively as a veterinary drug.
Structure and properties
Oxantel (C13H16N2O, Mr = 216.3 g/mol) is a pyrimidine derivative derived from pyrantel. It exists as a pale yellow crystalline powder and is practically insoluble in water.
Effects
Oxantel (ATCvet QP52AA51) is antihelminthic. It shows potent activity against whipworms in animals and acts specifically against whipworm . Oxantel is poorly effective against immature worms.
Mechanism of action
Oxantel is a selective agonist at nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the muscles of worms. The effect is due to neuromuscular blockade. As a result, the worms are paralyzed and excreted in the feces.
Indications
For the treatment of whipworm infestation in dogs.
Dosage
According to the product label. Oxantel is administered to dogs either directly or mixed into the food. Treatment is given once and repeated after 2 weeks.
Contraindications
Oxantel is contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity. It is recommended that oxantel not be given to pregnant animals. Refer to the drug label for complete precautions.
Interactions
Oxantel should not be given with parasympathomimetics and depolarizing muscle relaxants.
Adverse effects
Possible adverse effects include digestive disturbances such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and reduced general condition.
