Pain in the testicles
A twisted testicle is a very painful experience for the man. The pain of testicular twisting is often quite variable and depends strongly on the cause or the age of the patient. With a twisted testicle, which has already developed in the womb, there is hardly any pain and the newborn child behaves completely normally.
However, if an infant screams continuously and apparently without reason, a pediatrician should rule out testicular torsion. If the infant should indeed suffer from a twisted testicle, this can be found out by palpation of the testicle, because a twisted testicle is often hard. A palpation can therefore give first indications of a congenital testicular torsion.
In small children, twisted testicles can cause abdominal pain. These are of diffuse character and cannot be localized exactly. It is not uncommon for accompanying symptoms to occur.
The children refuse to eat or vomit. In older children, adolescents or adults, accidents or other traumas are usually the cause of a twisted testicle. The pain is then most intense directly in the testicles, but accompanying pain can also occur here.
The pain usually sets in suddenly and very violently. Sometimes patients complain of additional abdominal pain, especially in the lower abdomen and the groin area. It is precisely these abdominal pains that sometimes make the patients feel sick or vomit.
Furthermore, pain in the kidney area can also occur. Due to the intensity of the pain, the patients are very pale and suffer from palpitations and sweating. Quite a few patients also faint because of the pain.
In addition to the character of the pain, the color and size of the testis can also give information about a possible testicular torsion. If the testicle is discolored red or bluish, swollen and painful, a doctor should be consulted. This is most likely a twisted testicle.
Causes of swollen testicles
Swelling of the testicles can have a number of possible causes. Basically, such a swelling can be classified according to its character and course. It can occur suddenly and be very painful or it can develop slowly and be accompanied by little pain. In any case, a precise clarification by a doctor should be carried out in order to rule out more serious illness and possible effects on fertility.
- In case of suddenly occurring severe pain, testicular torsion should always be considered directly, as it requires immediate therapy.
- If the swelling occurs in conjunction with trauma, a testicular rupture or testicular hematoma may be a possible cause.
- Inflammation of the testes or adjacent structures is usually accompanied by other symptoms such as redness, swelling and overheating.
- If the swelling develops over a longer period of time and is painless or painless, a water or testicular hernia, testicular varicose veins, cysts or tumors may be the reason.
