Pain when coughing

Pain when coughing, which is located in the chest area, can be caused by a flu-like infection or bronchitis in early pregnancy. If typical cold symptoms appear in addition to the cough, it can be assumed that the cause is in the respiratory tract. Some pregnant women, however, complain of pain when coughing in the lower abdomen or in the groin during early pregnancy.

Coughing causes the pressure in the abdominal cavity to rise sharply in the short term. This puts pressure on the organs and surrounding structures. Due to the stretching of the ligaments in the pelvic area during pregnancy, the tissue can be generally irritated and painful due to the application of pressure.

If the pain occurs when coughing in the groin, it can also be a hernia. In this case, an intestinal loop protrudes through a weak point in the abdominal wall and can become trapped in this hernia. When coughing, the hernia sac is pressed into the gap, which results in the typical pain.

In general, only a medical examination can clarify the exact cause of the pain. If the pain persists, a gynaecological examination is therefore recommended.
