Parathyroid Hyperfunction (Hyperparathyroidism): Therapy

The therapy of secondary as well as tertiary hyperparathyroidism depends mainly on the underlying disease.

General measures

  • Review of permanent medication due topossible effect on existing disease.
  • In secondary hyperparathyroidism: adequate outdoor exposure (UV exposure for vitamin D synthesis).

Regular check-ups

  • Regular medical checkups

Nutritional medicine

  • Nutritional counseling based on nutritional analysis
  • Nutritional recommendations according to a mixed diet taking into account the disease at hand. This means, among other things:
    • Daily total of 5 servings of fresh vegetables and fruits (≥ 400 g; 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruits).
    • Once or twice a week fresh sea fish, i.e. fatty marine fish (omega-3 fatty acids) such as salmon, herring, mackerel.
    • High-fiber diet (whole grains, vegetables).
  • Observance of the following special dietary recommendations – primary hyperparathyroidism:
    • Drink plenty of fluids → to enhance calcium excretion and rehydration (fluid balance).
      • In mild hypercalcemia (calcium excess, 2.7-3.0 mmol/L): 2-3 liters of low-calcium mineral water per day! Contraindications: severe heart failure (cardiac insufficiency), severe renal insufficiency (renal insufficiency).
    • Diet should be low in calcium and vitamin D:
      • Calcium-rich foods are: Legumes (lentils, white beans, peas, lima beans, soybeans), vegetables and salads (broccoli, fennel, spinach, kale), milk and dairy products (yogurt, cheese).
      • Foods rich in vitamin D are: Cheese, fish (salmon, eel, trout, sprat, herring, kippers).
  • Observe the following special dietary recommendations – secondary hyperparathyroidism:
    • Diet rich in:
    • Cave: In renal insufficiency (kidney weakness) phosphate intake must be limited!
  • Selection of suitable food based on the nutritional analysis
  • See also under “Therapy with micronutrients (vital substances)” – if necessary, taking a suitable dietary supplement.
